Opmega strengthens the sustainable production of mussel seed with scientific advances

– Throughout 2024, and within the framework of the organization’s collaboration with the University of Vigo, key research has been carried out to optimize seed production in hatcheries. Among the most important advances are the sampling of broodstock, which have allowed improving the selection and quality of mussels for reproduction.

Vilagarcía de Arousa, February 18, 2025 – The Organization of Galician Mussel Producers (OPMEGA) continues to promote sustainability in the sector through the MytilUP project, in collaboration with the University of Vigo. This initiative is part of OPMEGA’s strategic actions to guarantee efficient and environmentally friendly production, ensuring the availability of mussel seed without relying exclusively on natural catchment.
During 2024, key research was carried out to optimize seed production in hatcheries. Among the most important advances are the sampling of broodstock, which has improved the selection and quality of mussels destined for reproduction. In addition, larval cultures have been carried out at different densities, analyzing their evolution and selecting the best conditions for their development.

Another of the project’s achievements has been the optimization of larval settlement, a crucial phase in seed production. Different settlement systems have been evaluated with the aim of increasing survival and strengthening sustainable production. Likewise, work has been carried out on the monitoring and control of the seed in the seed pan, ensuring that the minimum size for its transfer is the most appropriate for its development in the marine environment.
In line with its commitment to sustainability, Opmega has carried out improvements in the conditioning of broodstock, guaranteeing high quality clutches and larvae with greater viability. Different species of phytoplankton have also been tested, identifying those with the best nutritional profile for optimal mussel growth.
Opmega stresses that these advances are essential to ensure the continuity of the sector and reduce dependence on natural seed banks. “We are working to consolidate a sustainable and efficient production model that guarantees the future of Galician mussels and the preservation of the marine ecosystem,” says Ricardo Herbón, president of the organization.
The MytilUP project will continue to advance in 2025 with new complementary research, reaffirming the commitment of the bateeiro organization to innovation and sustainability in mussel production.
