OPMEGA TAKES TO THE STREETS AGAIN TO PROTEST AGAINST ALTRI’S MACROCELLULOSE PLANT
Representatives of the Galician Mussel Producers’ Organisation (OPMEGA), led by its president, Ricardo Herbón, took part in a new social mobilisation on Sunday to express their rejection of the implementation of Altri’s macrocellulose plant in Galicia.
Vilagarcía de Arousa, 14 December 2025.– The Galician Mussel Producers’ Organisation (Opmega) once again took part in the demonstration against Altri’s macrocellulose plant, this time in Santiago, reiterating its opposition to an initiative it considers incompatible with the protection of the environment, the estuaries and the production model linked to the sea.
The Opmega delegation was led by its president, Ricardo Herbón, who stressed that the mussel sector cannot remain on the sidelines of a project that is generating widespread social opposition and raising serious doubts about its environmental and economic impact. The organisation insists that Galicia cannot take risks that jeopardise strategic natural resources or activities that support thousands of direct and indirect jobs.
Opmega points out that the mussel sector is a fundamental pillar of the Galician coastal economy and that its future depends on preserving water quality and the balance of marine ecosystems. For this reason, the organisation considers it essential to listen to the voice of the affected productive sectors and to heed the mobilisation of citizens who have repeatedly expressed their rejection of macrocellulose.
The organisation thus reaffirms its commitment to defending the sea, environmental sustainability and a development model that is compatible with traditional activity and the future of the Galician estuaries.
