Vilagarcía, 11 December 2024
The Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility has guaranteed maritime safety conditions during the mussel harvest in Galicia, with the signing today by the Director General of the Merchant Navy, Gustavo Santana, of the Service Instruction that will allow the bateeiros to regularise their vessels to harvest with the necessary clearance and, consequently, maintain the coverage of professional contingencies with the Social Institute of the Navy (ISM).
This puts an end to an old demand of the mussel sector, with a great weight in certain areas of Galicia, mainly in the Rías Baixas, and regulates an activity that has no other way of being carried out and that, due to the lack of an adequate regulation, was being carried out in precarious conditions.
Santana was joined at the signing ceremony held at the headquarters of the Organisation of Galician Mussel Producers (OPMEGA) in Vilagarcía de Arousa (Pontevedra) by the director general of the Social Marine Institute, Elena Martínez; the regional director of the Sea in Vigo, Elena Suárez Sarmiento; and the president, Ricardo Herbón. All of them have expressed the importance of working together to reach a consensus that, in this case, favours the development of an activity as important for the Galician economy as mussel aquaculture.
Improving safety
Until now, vessels engaged in mussel harvesting have carried out this activity without obtaining prior clearance. The Maritime Authorities could not clear this type of vessels to sail on the coast because they are classified in a class (III/S) with which they can only operate within sheltered waters.
With this Service Instruction, these vessels will be able to be certified in conditions to obtain clearance to operate on the coast and work in the harvesting of the cheek in safe conditions.
The other major demand of the sector, which was to be able to work ‘in company’, i.e. to have access to the multi-entanglement procedure when the operators are different, was already solved.
